We started our work in 2005 on the streets of Mysore (near the big market, Devarajurs Market, and outside KR Hospital) where we met a handful of little kids living on the sidewalk with their moms and dads. Most of these kids are still with us at Karunya Mane.
Today, we have three programs, the largest of which is Karunya Mane (panorama photo above). This is where our kids live 24/7 and receive everything they need for a productive and happy childhood – food and healthy nutritional supplements, medical and dental help, clothing and footwear, a solid education, extracurricular activities, and guidance and love.
Our immediate needs include funds to pay for education-related expenses, such as school fees and tutoring fees. Our kids attend nice private schools in our area and receive two hours of daily after-school tutoring (“tuitions”) with eleven great teachers.
Right now, in October, the kids are on their three-week holiday from school for the big Dasara Festival. During that time, they’re visiting their favorite dentist (an every-six-month affair!). Yes, lots of fun!
Oral hygiene is an issue that our kids face – most of them arrive at Karunya Mane with horrible teeth since, well, who brushes teeth when they’re living on the streets? Oral hygiene problems begin at an early age, of course, and follow the kids throughout their lives, so we’re being diligent and are trying to tackle the numerous cavities and, yes, even a root canal or two.
The kids are great at the dentist – surprisingly, they are polite when getting their treatments and sit quietly and peacefully through their procedures. Wow.
Your funds also help us pay for vaccinations, regular doctor visits and medications, the food the kids eat – a healthy mix of white rice and organic red rice, lots of vegetables, chapatis, ragi balls, tons of lentils and other legumes, milk and dried fruits and nuts for snacks … and very little sugary snacks!
A special thanks to Chris Ebbe – who is always thinking of ways to help underprivileged children everywhere – for introducing us to Le Yoga Shop Paris, Mysore Yoga Paris and Le Yoga Journal Paris!
Peace to you,
